All About Us
Kalis Group is a proudly Tasmanian, family-owned business with more than 60 years of history. It began when Emmanuel Kalis, a Greek migrant determined to make the most of his opportunity in Tasmania, built a fruit and vegetable wholesaling business that connected local growers to markets across Australia. That business grew into Freshcut, which still supplies fresh food across Tasmania as part of the group today.
From there came property, starting with the buildings his businesses traded from and growing through acquisitions and major developments. These include the Icon project, which brought Myer, a retail precinct and the Crowne Plaza to Hobart, and the Findex building on the site of the original fruit market. In 2001 we opened our first hotel, the Black Buffalo.
Today the group includes Freshcut, hotels, bottle shops and a growing property portfolio.
Still led by Emmanuel, with the second and third generations working in the business, we've kept the family feel we started with. Our Greek heritage shapes how we work every day, with respect, community, honesty and growth at the heart of everything we do.
We back local trades and suppliers wherever we can, champion Tasmania at every opportunity, and will keep growing and developing while staying Tasmanian and family owned.
